This service, funded by a $3 million appropriation from the Alabama legislature, provides current information to all Alabamians.  It allows every public school child, every student in a two-year or four-year college and every public library patron in the state access to thousands of reliable resources online including full-text magazine articles, electronic reference books, encyclopedias, medical information, statistical sources and homework aids.  All of these resources can be accessed through computers at local public libraries and public schools throughout Alabama.

Students, teachers and citizens are able to research topics using simple search strategies, including keyword searching, across thousands of magazine articles.  With full text of many articles available online, students can spend their time productively reviewing the information content.  AVL users may choose from seven databases - Ebscohost, Electric Library, Encyclopedia Britannica, OCL FirstSearch, Grolier Online, ProQuest and SIRS Knowledge Source.

The AVL is the reality of a combined effort of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, the Alabama Department of Education, the Alabama Department of Potsecondary Education, the Alabama Supercomputer Authority and the Alabama Public Library Service. This joint effort is providing a cost effective, statewide approach to improving education throughout Alabama.
